Barff Bird Observations 2017.

Saturday 13th May. 0430am to 0800am. Dawn.
 
Cloudy start becoming brighter with some sun. A Breezy day but warmer.
 
Quite a productive morning around the Barff with Denis.
 
Highlights
At least 3 Spotted Flycatcher observed around the woods. First Swift seen over the Barff.
Probably 3 singing Whitethroat observed. Bypass Trail and Barff Summit.
At least 4 Garden Warbler located. 6 Willow Warbler singing.
Usual numbers of Blackcap and Chiffchaff seen and heard.
Swallow seen over the Barff Summit.
Kestrel hunting around the Bypass Trail.
A pair of Bullfinch around the Old Pinewood Clearing.
Three Linnet seen along the Bypass Trail.
 
Other Birds
At least 2 pairs of Mistle Thrush and a singing male seen. 4 singing Song Thrush.
Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Coal Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit,
Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, (Barff Farm end) Crow, Magpie,
Pheasant, Large unidentified Gull overhead.
32 Species.

Monday 15th May. 0610 am to 0730 am.
 
A bright mild start but cloud was increasing and it was starting to rain as I left. Rain was forecast for today.
 
Barff Lane.
Whitethroat, Yellowhammer and Skylark.
 
Barff Highlights.
 
4 singing Spotted Flycatcher seen. Carpark area, Into the Silver Birch wood, Old Rifle Range and at the rear of the Left hand wood.
3 Garden Warbler, 7 Willow Warbler, 2 Whitethroat on Barff Summit and Bypass Trail, 10 Chiffchaff and 12 Blackcap.
5 House Martin above Roadside wood near Barff House Farm.
A Buzzard East to West over Old Pinewood Clearing.
Lot of commotion in Right hand wood from birds possibly mobbing a Tawny Owl. I could not see it but no doubt he could see me!
Up to 6 Song Thrush seen and heard singing. Goldcrest singing in Silver Birch Wood and near Car park.
Linnet singing along Bypass Trail.
 
Other Birds
Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Great Tit, Blue Tit,
Long Tailed Tit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Crow, Magpie, Wood Pigeon, Pheasant and several large Gulls overhead.
 
Still no more Cuckoo observations yet!!

Wednesday 17th May. 0905 am to 1015 am.
 
Damp, Wet, overcast morning but quite humid and still.
 
Barff Lane.
Singing Whitethroat, Corn Bunting, Skylark and Yellowhammer.
 
Barff Birds
 
Highlights
A mixed flock of Hirundine. Up to 12 Swift, 8 House Martin and a few Swallow flying over the top of the Silver Birch Woodland and Taphill.
A good morning for Spotted Flycatcher. In the Left hand wood, 2 males were singing in the Silver Birch wood, 1 in the Beech wood, 1 near the Old Rifle range,
1 at the rear of the Left hand wood. One calling in the Right hand wood and 1 in the Road side wood. Total 7 Spotted Flycatcher.
Garden Warblers. Two in clearings in the Left hand wood. One along the Bypass Trail. Two around the Barff Summit area.
Willow Warbler. Two in clearing in the Left hand wood. One along Bypass Trail. Two in Old Pinewood Clearing.
One pair of Whitethroat on the Barff Summit.
Usual numbers of over a dozen Blackcap and Chiffchaff singing around the Woods.
At least 5 young Mistle Thrush counted in the rear of the Left hand wood.
Goldcrest singing in the Birch wood, Scots pine near the heathland and in the Larch trees near the car park.
At least 6 Song Thrush singing today.
 
Other Birds.
Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Magpie, Crow and Wood Pigeon.

Saturday 20th May. 0415 am. Dawn.
 
Sunrise. Sunny with cloud. Wet underfoot. Quite cold when the sun rose.
 
Nearly tripped over a hedgehog leaving my cul de sac on my bike at 0400 am.

Close views of singing Corn Bunting. Two singing along with Skylark, Whitethroat and Yellowhammer.

Highlights
Cuckoo around the Barff Summit and Old Pinewood area for a good period of this morning’s visit. Call was quite pathetic most of the time. Not very clear and mostly a one note call.
Male Tawny Owl calling quite often from Roadside Wood.
Three Spotted Flycatcher calling. Three Garden Warbler singing. Five Willow Warbler singing. Three Whitethroat singing. Two along the Bypass and one on the Barff Summit.
A pair of Stock Dove around Tawny Owl Box 2. Three Mistle Thrush with a pair of Bullfinch perched in old Larch tree on the Old Pinewood Clearing.
 
Other Birds
Linnet along Bypass Trail. Goldcrest singing in 3 locations. Plenty of Blackcap and Chiffchaffs still singing. Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird,
6 Song Thrush, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Pheasant, Wood Pigeon, Crow and Magpie. Pied Wagtail and Starling seen around the Reservoir area. Chaffinch, Goldfinch and
A single Swift over the Barff Summit.
 
36 Species.
 
A Fox was barking around the Old Pumping Station around 500 am.

Monday 22nd May. 0410 am. Sunrise.
 
A still, cool, calm, cloudy start to the day with the sun coming up and through the clouds.
 
Barff Lane.
Yellowhammer, Whitethroat, Skylark and Corn Bunting singing.
 
Barff Birds.
Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker showing well today.
12+ singing Blackcap. 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Garden Warbler, 7+ Chiffchaff and 1 pair of Whitethroat.
4 singing Spotted Flycatcher.
A pair of Mallard over the Barff.
Lots of young Long Tailed Tits seen today. Stock Dove calling in Roadside Wood.
Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Blackbird, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Goldcrest,
Great Tit, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Yellowhammer down Bypass Trail, Crow, Magpie, Pheasant,
Wood Pigeon.

Wednesday 24th May. 1200 Noon to 230 pm.
 
Phew!! Hottest day of the year?? Possibly. Lots of sunshine and cloud with a nice breeze blowing over the Barff. Nice to be in the shade of the Oaks today!!
 
Barff Lane.
Swifts, Skylark, 2 Whitethroat and Yellowhammer.

Highlight of the Day
Little Owl located around the Crucifix tree in the Left hand wood. Heard its call first then watched it flying onto a branch bot far from the Telegraph line that heads up to
The reservoir. Its been sometime since I have seen this species. It is easy to overlook. Nice to know their still here.
 
Whitethroat located in 3 areas of the Barff today. Barff Summit, Perimeter Fence and 2 singing  along the Bypass Trail.
Spotted Flycatcher since near nesthole in the Silver Birch Wood. Also seen in the Old Rifle Range area, Rear of the Left hand wood, Right hand wood and possibly 1 in the Roadside Wood.
3 Garden Warbler, 5 Willow Warbler and several singing Blackcap and Chiffchaff.
Bullfinch heard around the Car park area. Linnet calling along the Bypass Trail.
Several sightings of Mistle Thrush and Song Thrush suggest that their numbers are holding up around the Barff Woodland.
 
Other Birds seen
Blackbird, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Pied Wagtail, Crow,
Magpie, Jackdaw, Wood Pigeon and Pheasant.
 
A few Butterflies seen today which included Speckled Wood, Peacock and Small White.
 
Now is the time to identify the late spring and summer flowers coming out around the woods.
 
The Summit meadow and other areas are today awash with Meadow Buttercup, Garlic Mustard, Red and White Campion, Common Mouse ear, Greater Stitchwort, Herb Robert, Birds Foot Trefoil,
Bush Vetch, Red Clover, Woods Avens, Mare’s Tail, Cow Parsley, Forget me Not, Common Centaury, Foxglove, Germander Speedwell, Hedge Woundwort, White Dead Nettle, Ribwort Plantain,
Daisy, Common Cats Ear and Dandelion. So if Botany is your thing, there is plenty to see, with a lot more interesting species to come as we move into summer.

Saturday 27th May. 0500 am. Slept in!!
 
Another beautiful good to be alive day! Warm Sunny with high cloud. Rain forecast later.
 
Barff Lane.
Swift, Yellow Wagtail, Corn Bunting, Skylark, Yellowhammer, Linnet, 2 Whitethroat and 3 Greylag Geese.
 
Highlights
 
Best views so far of the croaky Cuckoo doing his rounds around the Old Pinewood Clearing.
3 Whitethroat, 3 Garden Warbler, 3 Spotted Flycatcher, 5 Willow Warbler and several Blackcap and Chiffchaff.
Heron and Collared Dove overhead. A good day for Great Spotted Woodpeckers actively feeding and enticing
their young from nestholes. Stock Dove calling around Old Pumping Station.
 
Other Birds
Song Thrush, Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Dunnock, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Linnet, Bullfinch, Great Tit, Blue Tit,
Long Tailed Tit, Pheasant, Wood Pigeon, Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie and Pheasant.

Tuesday 30th May. 0540 am.
 
A dull. Overcast, warm, humid morning. Wet underfoot.
 
Spring is now slowly moving towards Summer. Still a lot of birds still singing, especially today were the Song Thrush, Blackcaps
And Skylarks. Lots of young birds seen around the woods.

2 Whitethroat, Skylark and Yellowhammer.

Highlights.
A noisy Oystercatcher North East over the Right  hand wood.
Several Swift flying over the Barff Summit.

Wednesday 31st May. 1210 pm to 230 pm.
 
A hot sunny day with a gentle breeze and high Cirrus cloud above the Barff.
 
Barff Lane.
Singing Yellowhammer, Whitethroat and calling Swift overhead. Lots of Sedges, Cow Parsley, White Campion and Poppy down the lane.
Pity about the litter.
 
 
Barff Birds
Like the woodland birds it was good to be in the shade. Lots of young birds about today. Notable were young Blackcap and Chiffchaffs.
Spotted Flycatcher, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, Bullfinch, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Linnet, Crow, Magpie,

Saturday 3rd June. 0400 am.
 
Overcast drizzly start to the morning, but cloud began to break with a little sunshine. Wet underfoot.
 
Barff Lane
Three Oystercatcher noisily chasing each other across the lane and around the neighboring farmland.
Singing Corn Bunting, Skylark, Whitethroat and Yellowhammer.
 
Barff Birds
 
Highlights
Cuckoo briefly heard around the Old Pumping station area.
At least 2 male Bullfinch softly singing around the Barff Summit and Old Pinewood Clearing.
 
Birds Singing this Morning.
Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Mistle Thrush, Song Thrush, Blackbird, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Great Tit, Coal Tit,
Willow Warbler, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Whitethroat, Goldfinch and Chaffinch.
 
Other Birds seen.
Crow, Magpie, Wood Pigeon, Pheasant, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Long Tailed Tit, Blue Tit and 2 Spotted Flycatcher.
