Barff Bird Observations 2018. - DerekCooper - 01-01-2018

Monday 1st January. 2018. 0900am. First visit of the year.
Milder. A still sunny start but clouding over by 1000am.
Barff Lane.
Observed a passage of 26 Great Black Backed Gulls flying south east over the Barff.
 
Barff Birds
A lot of activity from local woodland birds today.
A Coal Tit was singing along with 3 Great Tits and 4 Blue Tits.
Redwing were around the rear of the Left Hand wood.
Other Birds
Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Song Thrush, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Long Tailed Tit, Crow, Magpie, Jay and Wood Pigeon.
Far too many Squirrels seen today!!

Saturday 6th January. 0800am to 130pm. Birdbox maintenance day.
Cold morning. Some sun. Mostly cloudy with a little drizzle at times.
 
Most of today was spent cleaning out and checking on the 60+ birdboxes around the Woods
Quite abit of resident bird activity. Several Blue Tits singing around the wood.
Notable that Nuthatch were calling when I was cleaning out a couple of boxes used by this species last year.
Buzzard flew through the wood near the car park chased by Crows.
Male Kestrel soaring above me in the car park.
Other Birds
Redwing and Redpoll heard calling. Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Long Tailed Tit flocks, Goldcrest, Wren, Robin, Dunnock, Blackbird, Great Tit, Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker,
Magpie and Wood Pigeon.
Bluebells now emerging everywhere on the woodland floor.

Monday 8th January. 0915am.
Very cold. Roads were like ice on my bike. A sunny crisp winters morning.
A productive morning around the Barff.
Feet were cold but it was a bright day with plenty of ground frost everywhere.
Birds were quite active today.
Highlights
A Buzzard observed around the Reservoir perimeter fence. Three Great Tit, 3 Blue Tit and 1 Coal Tit singing.
Female Sparrowhawk hunting in the Beech Wood. A single Common Gull over the Old Pinewood Clearing.
Several Redwing, 3 Fieldfare and a solitary Mistle Thrush seen. A Skylark over the Barff.
Other Birds
Redpoll, Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Wren, Long Tailed Tit, Robin, Blackbird and Wood Pigeon.

Wednesday 10th January. 1.00pm.
A mild day. After a wet morning the rain stopped at midday and it cleared up a little into the afternoon. Wet underfoot around the Barff.
Barff Bird Highlights
A pair of Song Thrush in residence on the Barff Summit. The male weakly singing. Great Tit and Blue Tit singing around the wood along with 1 Dunnock.
Buzzard being mobbed by Crows. A couple of sightings of it around the Perimeter Fence and above the Old Pinewood Clearing.
Male Kestrel on Post near Perimeter Fence. Sparrowhawk also observed in two locations.
3 to 4 Jay around the Taphill area calling loudly.
Up to 5 Bullfinch feeding amongst the Briars near the main car park area. Often see them feeding on dead nettle stalks.
Other Birds
Redpoll, Goldfinch, Robin, Blackbird, Treecreeper, Coal Tit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch,Wren and Wood Pigeon.

Saturday 13th January. 0815 am.
A dull cloudy day with a cold southerly breeze blowing across the Barff.
Barff Birds
A flock of 8 Bullfinch around the Reservoir Perimeter fence.
Green Woodpecker calling briefly. A Great Tit, a Blue Tit and a Coal Tit singing.
Other Birds
Goldcrest, Long Tailed Tit, Chaffinch, Blackbird, Dunnock, Wren, Robin, Wood Pigeon and crow.

Saturday 20th January. 0815am.
Very cold frosty day. Fairly dull but the weak sun did try to make an appearance occasionally.
A handful of Great Tits and Blue Tits in song around the Barff.
At least 3 Mistle Thrush around Heathland and Bypass trail today.
Other Birds
Bullfinch, Goldfinch, Coal Tit, Dunnock, Wren, Robin, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Blackbird,
Magpie, Crow and Wood Pigeon.

Monday 22nd January. 0900am.
Still cold but much milder than it has been. A sunny start with a light cold breeze over the Barff.
Its amazing how a slight rise in temperature and the sun coming out has an affect on the Barff’s birdlife.
Blue Tits were so active today. Singing, chasing each other, feeding on the ground and in the undergrowth and roaming through the woods with
Great Tits and Coal Tits. All three species were singing around the wood.
Blackbirds were quite numerous today especially around the edge of the Heathland. At least 12 birds were turning over the leaf litter searching for food.
Mistle Thrush and Song Thrush also observed along with several calling Chaffinch. Bullfinch seen in two locations.
A Great Spotted Woodpecker was drumming near the Scots Pine Wood. 25 Goldfinch and 2 Redpoll were feeding high up on Silver Birch in the Beech Wood.
Other Birds
Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Long Tailed Tit, Robin, Wren, Dunnock, Crow, Magpie, Wood Pigeon and nearby were Common Gull and Black Headed Gull.

Saturday 27th January. 0800am.
A cool cloudy morning. A cold breeze on the way home on my bike.
Brayton Village.
A Mistle Thrush and a Song Thrush in song around St Wilfred’s Church.
Barff Lane.
How wonderful to hear a Skylark singing above a Stubble field on the way back from the Barff. Pheasant and Black Headed Gull nearby.
Barff Birds.
At least 3 Chaffinch were in song around the woodland this morning. Rather feeble songs but the first I have heard this year.
Up to 4 Coal Tit in song along with several Great Tit and Blue Tit. A Great Spotted Woodpecker heard drumming in the Right hand Wood.
Other Birds
Buzzard over the Heathland. Bullfinch around the Perimeter Fence. Nuthatch, Long Tailed Tit. Sing Dunnock, Wren, Goldfinch and Robin.
Blackbird, Song Thrush, Treecreeper, Wood Pigeon, Crow and Magpie.

Monday 29th January. 1230am.
After a wet morning the sun came out to give a pleasant afternoon. A northerly breeze was blowing but in sheltered areas it was quite warm.
Barff Lane.
Skylark singing again. A sizable flock of at least 60 unidentified finches on a stubble field near to the Barff.
Barff Birds
At least 3 Mistle Thrush with 1 bird singing around the Old Pumping Station. Several Redwing in the Roadside Wood with Blackbirds.
3 Nuthatch calling. Several Blue Tit, Great Tit, Robin and Dunnock singing. Three Great Black Backed Gull over the Old Pinewood area.
At least 5 Bullfinch counted today. Long Tailed Tit, Wren, Chaffinch, Magpie, Crow, Wood Pigeon also seen.
